The Hounds

The Hounds
This is the world famous pack of deer-finding dogs that mostly just keep our laps warm. From top left clockwise: Sasha, Ruger, Jackson, and Heidi. Jackson enjoys stirring up sibling fights and is a world champion face licker. Sasha mostly enjoys sleepin and laying on hot sidewalks catching some rays. Heidi has two great loves in life - Trän and food. Ruger enjoys good mystery novels, sudoku, scrabble, his favorite subject is math and is doing very well in ancient chinese language studies. He also enjoys biscuitville on saturday mornings.

Middle Keeney Rapid

This was my line in the Middle Keeney during the run of the New River Gorge.

Andrew and I pulled the 4runner over and picked a mountain to climb to the top of. There is no trail, no sign of humans, nothing but 5000ft of up. There's no much to do when you get there but look through binoculars and take pics. We saw sheep, and mountain goats, and small planes way down below us. I think you can see the curvature of the earth from here. Pictured is the Turnagain Arm just outside of Anchorage. This is the sound that several glacier's runoff and other rivers meet the sea.

Dont Slip!

Dont Slip!
This was some of the typical terrain we encountered on the way up our random mountain. Most areas were not this steep, but some were. Only goats and sheep need try to live here. If you think you are in shape, try a climb like this!

From Flat Top

From Flat Top
Trän and I hiked up Flat Top and here you can see Anchorage spread out below. The mosqitoes here are as big as pigeons.

A beach clearing unit emerged from the bushes. This particular grizzly was babysitting 3 cubs - which presented us with a nervous situation.

This black bear was heading to the river too.

It is impossible to take a bad picture while hiking on a glacier in Alaksa.

Crazy situation

Crazy situation
This rock is as big as a volkswagen. It is sitting on a small leg of ice that is melting out from under it. A real photography lover would have had a field day up here.

Glacier scene

This is Andrew and his dog Suka. We were hiking on a Glacier near the Matanuska River

Russian Reds

Russian Reds
This is a video capture of me fighting a salmon. I ran it through a filter to camo the grainy nature of the shot. Suitable for framing.

Trän

Trän
Trän atop some mountain with Crescent Lake as a backdrop. This is the view after a long hike out of Cooper Landing.

Stringer

Stringer
This a stringer of salmon caught in a short spurt. When the fish are in, they are in. We camped at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers. Pictured l-r Me, Julie (Andrew's wife), and Andrew. Trän is behind the camera. We stayed here a few days and fished and hiked around in the area. Cooper Landing is the only thing around and is one of my favorite places on earth. Everyone should eat at Gwins Sushi Bar (the only restaraunt in a one horse fishing village - they do not serve sushi). We call this picture "the leg"

Gwin's

Gwin's
This is my favorite restaraunt on planet earth.

Sea Kayaking in Alaska

Sea Kayaking in Alaska
My wife and I went out with Andrew and Julie in tandem sea kayaks. Beautiful scenery, but alot of work when you are used to mountain rivers.

Baby Falls Tellico

Baby Falls Tellico
Me at the lip of Baby Falls. The Tellico is located in the eastern mountains of tennessee. Shaphan and I ran this river and loved it. Everyone should try a waterfall.

Trän's first Alaskan salmon

Trän's first Alaskan salmon
This is a funny photo (her sunglasses got out of whack during the fight) of my wife's first salmon from the Russian River in Alaska.

Tundra Kings

Tundra Kings
This is one of my favorite photos.

Boone and Crocket Caribou

Boone and Crocket Caribou
This is a big caribou. It fulfilled the requirements to be considered a trophy book animal. There is no way to caption this whole story, but it includes a 17 day hunt in arctic Alaska, living for a few days in an eskimo village, boating 35 miles up the noatak river, getting inside info from a native as to the best hunting grounds, being 500 miles from the nearest american road, eating MREs for 7 days straight, patching a zodiak raft, realizing the same raft is now irrepairable due to a bad valve, getting rescued by a family of natives that were testing an empty boat to buy (had room for all our gear), shooting 16 bullets and running 3 miles in a mad chase to complete the hunt and finish the kill (knocked scope and didnt know), living in a tarp after the tent was destroyed in a sustained 50 mph windstorm, being left out in the bush a few extra days due to inclimate weather, 17 days with my best friend making a GIANT memory that I will never forget.

Andrew's Caribou

Andrew's Caribou
This is Andrews caribou from the same caribou hunting adventure. It's like being on the moon up there - but with grizzly bears and caribou.

Bin Laden Bucks

Bin Laden Bucks
I took these two bucks on 9-11. What a day in many ways.

Matt's big buck

Matt's big buck
My uncle and soccer, fishing, hunting, and all around childhood hero took this nice 140 class buck in his back yard (100 acres of oak ridges and swampy bottoms). He had the decency to call me so that I could ride to Greensboro and "help" him drag it out. When I showed up, there was about 6 people already there. It was years before I bested this buck and he loved every minute of it.

Dutch Buck

Dutch Buck
I took my nephew Judah on his first deer hunt this fall. After much patience and watching several smaller bucks and does, this little buck ran out right before quitting time. He has a white snout which is unusual. Judah was smiling from ear to ear for a week.

Gas Line Gold

Gas Line Gold
Pat took this nice buck on the legendary sweet spot that has no rival in the hunting world. This was the biggest buck of that year from our little group and his biggest buck at that time. He has since harvested bigger bucks, but few that required more than 3 hours to extract from the middle of the worlds biggest brier garden.

Old Droopy

Old Droopy
My friend Pat acquired a small piece of land just outside the city limits. We saw alot of deer and smaller bucks in this little overlooked patch of land. I hunted one afternoon and sat through a violent rainstorm (mostly to test my goretex suit for upcoming trips to Alaska). Low and behold out walk about 15 to 20 does right after the storm passes at dusk. Along with this big, wide Buck. This buck was very old and had lived his life eating out of gardens and backyards. I'm glad the goretex suit was working. The story doesnt stop here. My first shot went through the top of a small tree that I didnt see in my scope. Somehow the bullet still hit the deer at about 100 yds. You can see the hole in his shoulder. The buck then ran into the ONLY spot in the grown up weed field that I could shoot. I made a clean second shot and was able to recover the first bullet from the leg. I call this my magic bullet. The Buck had split his entire bottom lip on something. The wound had healed up just fine, but left his bottom lip in two distinct flaps. He looked a little bit like Droopy.

First Whitetail

First Whitetail
Andrew Warren, a lifelong and closest friend and my best man, took this nice doe this past fall on a visit from Alaska. We never really got a chance to hunt together before he move to Ak. My wife and I visit Ak as often as possible to visit with Andrew and his wife Julie. Most trips include salmon fishing and some even caribou hunting. Hiking and other outdoors activities are not to be missed in Ak. But it was nice to get outdoors in good old NC again.

Wet-Britches Buck

Wet-Britches Buck
Bill Davis (center), Pat's father took this buck after fording a chest-deep swollen creek to get to the stand we sent him to. We did not realize the condition of the creek. Bill manned up and crossed it anyway in COLD November temps to sit for hours through a morning in hopes that he would see something. This, I believe, is a good return on the investment. This was his biggest buck ever as they live and hunt in Florida. Also shown is Pat on the left and Pat's grandfather on the right.

Old Smoky

Old Smoky
My friend and hunting buddy took this fantastic 13 pointer with a blackpowder rifle. This was an unforgettable morning that had both of us covered over in deer from all directions.

Hogwallow

Hogwallow
This was my first +200lb buck. My uncle and I could barely drag this guy up the hill to the truck. But, thats a good problem.

Creek Bottom Bruiser

Creek Bottom Bruiser
This buck is one of my personal favorites. I shot him on a beautiful morning when everything just came together. The best part about it was that I tried my hardest to: #1 get one of my friends to go with us (he would have been the lucky guy), #2 get my other friend to sit where I was sitting (and he would have been the lucky guy). But as it were, I was the lucky guy.

The Monroe Monster

The Monroe Monster
My friend almost harvested this Buck. His father had an understandable case of buck-fever with this buck. I am fortunate enough to have the last story with this Buck. This was an outstanding 8 pointer that grossed 151 B&C. I will probably never shoot another buck that is bigger than this. I must give a personal thanks to Pat for turning me loose on this beast. I owe him one - mayble I'll just video for him for a season or two.
